Peter Obi criticizes Nigeria's leadership for the country's failure to win medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, blaming "recklessness" and "rascality" across sectors. Despite significant investment, Nigeria returned home empty-handed, sparking calls for reforms in sports administration.
Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, has criticized Nigeria's leadership following the country's disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Team Nigeria failed to secure any medals despite significant financial investment.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed his frustration, highlighting the "recklessness and rascality" within the country's leadership across various sectors. He contrasted Nigeria's massive expenditure on the Olympics with that of smaller nations like Jamaica, which won six medals with a fraction of Nigeria's budget.
Obi also condemned the prioritization of routine and favoritism over competence, pointing out that some injured athletes, unfit to compete, were still in Paris, collecting allowances. He accused sports officials of exploiting the situation for personal gain. President Bola Tinubu's administration also voiced disappointment, with the Minister of Sports, John Enoh, calling for reforms to improve sports administration and leadership in the country.
The poor showing at the Olympics has sparked a broader conversation about the need for accountability and effective leadership in Nigeria.
