Amidst Rivers State Assembly crisis, Speaker warns of alleged demolition plot by Governor Fubara. Tensions escalate as accusations fly, highlighting political turmoil.
In a dramatic turn of events, the Speaker of the pro-Wike faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, has raised an alarm over Governor Similanayi Fubara's purported plan to demolish the official quarters of the lawmakers.
Amaewhule, speaking to journalists after Governor Fubara's unexpected visit to the quarters located in GRA, Port Harcourt, expressed grave concerns. He alleged that Fubara's agenda during the visit was not one of inspection, but rather to strategize the demolition of the structures.
Describing the Governor's actions as an affront to democracy, Amaewhule accused Fubara of disregarding the Constitution and flouting the laws of the state. He emphasized that the Assembly quarters, touted as one of the best in Nigeria, was commissioned by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, now Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Amaewhule condemned what he perceived as undue interference by the Governor, asserting that the quarters were exclusively designated for members of the House of Assembly, not the Executive arm. Amaewhule claimed that Fubara had mobilized thugs to trespass onto the premises, vandalizing property and causing chaos. He lamented the Governor's priorities, contrasting Fubara's focus on demolition with the responsibilities of other governors to improve the welfare of their constituents.
Despite the tumultuous situation, Amaewhule affirmed the resolve of the 10th Rivers Assembly members to continue their legislative duties, undeterred by external pressures. The crisis in Rivers State escalated further when Chief Tony Okocha of the All Progressives Congress (APC) urged pro-Wike lawmakers to impeach Fubara. However, lawmakers loyal to Fubara quickly rallied, asserting their readiness to proceed with legislative business.
As tensions mount and political maneuvers intensify, the fate of the Assembly quarters hangs in the balance, emblematic of broader power struggles within Rivers State politics.
