US pop star Lizzo has announced her departure from the music industry, citing online ridicule and character attacks as the primary reasons. The About Damn Time singer, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, expressed exhaustion from being constantly criticized for her appearance and personality on social media platforms.
While she did not specify the exact trigger for her decision, it came shortly after facing backlash related to a lawsuit filed against her by former dancers last August. In an Instagram post, Lizzo, 35, lamented the falsehoods spread about her and the disrespectful treatment she endured, emphasizing her desire to create music and spread positivity.
This announcement followed her appearance at a Radio City fundraiser for President Joe Biden, which had drawn criticism due to the ongoing allegations against her. Last August, Lizzo and her production company were sued by ex-dancers for sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment, allegations that she vehemently denied at the time.
Despite her popularity and success, Lizzo expressed feeling unwelcome in a world where she continually faced scrutiny and disparagement, concluding her post with a declaration of resignation from the music industry.
