The presidency has explained the challenges faced by security agencies in arresting former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, who is wanted by the EFCC for alleged financial crimes worth ₦80.2 billion. His immunity, as a current governor, complicates law enforcement actions, frustrating ongoing attempts to bring him to justice.

The challenges faced by security agencies in arresting former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello have come to light, as President Bola Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, addressed the complexities involved. Since the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Bello wanted in April due to alleged financial crimes amounting to ₦80.2 billion, multiple attempts to apprehend him have been hindered.

Onanuga highlighted that Bello is effectively shielded by the immunity granted to the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo. He stated that Bello's presence within the governor’s residence complicates law enforcement efforts, as police cannot act without violating this immunity. "If he stays inside Governor Ododo's house, the police cannot do anything because they will be violating that immunity," Onanuga explained.

This situation has led to significant frustration among law enforcement agencies, as Bello's repeated absences from court hearings add to their difficulties. Onanuga drew a comparison to diplomatic immunity, stating, “It’s like a diplomat enjoying certain immunity; you cannot do anything about it.”
