President Bola Tinubu has opted out of celebrating his 72nd birthday amidst what his administration described as "challenging times" in Nigeria. In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged well-wishers and friends not to organize any celebratory events or place adverts in the media.
This decision comes in light of recent security challenges and tragedies across the nation, including the killing of army and police personnel in Delta State.
Tinubu expressed his solidarity with the families affected by these incidents and emphasized the need for national reflection and unity during this period of adversity.
The cancellation of Tinubu's annual birthday colloquium marks the fourth consecutive year it has been deferred due to prevailing circumstances. Past cancellations were prompted by incidents such as terrorist attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead of birthday celebrations, Tinubu encouraged individuals who intended to place goodwill adverts to donate the funds to charity organizations.
He stressed the importance of redirecting resources towards initiatives that benefit the less privileged, reflecting his commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.
While acknowledging the efforts of security forces in rescuing kidnapped children in Kaduna and Sokoto states, Tinubu reiterated his dedication to building a safer, more prosperous, and united Nigeria.
The decision to forego birthday celebrations serves as a symbolic gesture of solidarity and empathy with Nigerians grappling with insecurity and other challenges.
Tinubu's stance underscores a message of resilience and collective responsibility, urging citizens to prioritize the nation's welfare above personal festivities. As Nigeria navigates through these turbulent times, Tinubu's decision reflects a commitment to national unity and progress amidst adversity.
