In a live appearance on Channels Television's Lunchtime Politics programme, Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, dispels rumors of Governor Siminalayi Fubara signing a peace agreement with predecessor Nyesom Wike under duress.
Johnson asserts that the governor did not negotiate from a position of weakness during the meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday. The region has witnessed political turmoil in the past three months, with a significant rift between Fubara and Wike leading to decampments, parallel sittings, an impeachment plot, and resignations.
President Buhari's intervention directed the withdrawal of court matters, recognition of specific House leadership, and the reinstatement of resigned commissioners.
The peace agreement faces controversy, with elder statesman Pa Edwin Clark claiming Fubara was "ambushed." Despite doubts, Johnson emphasizes the governor's commitment to peace, citing forthcoming approvals as indications of their dedication to the agreement
