Fire engulfed a section of the historic Gidan Rumfa palace belonging to the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, on Friday night around 11 pm. According to palace sources, unknown perpetrators forcefully gained entry, set fire to the area, and locked the door, causing extensive damage to the throne, air conditioning units, and other valuable items.
The incident, which occurred without prior notice to the Kano State Fire Service, fortunately resulted in no casualties. Munir Sanusi Bayero, the Emir's Chief of Staff, confirmed the fire in a statement on Saturday morning, July 13, 2024, noting that it affected the outer court of the palace at Kofar Kudu. He assured the public that measures are being implemented to enhance palace security and investigate the cause of the fire to prevent future incidents.
The affected section of the palace, where the Emir traditionally holds court sessions every Monday, has been disrupted by the incident, raising concerns about the security of the historical site.
