The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued a series of security advisories to Nigerian nationals residing in the country, ahead of the highly anticipated 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana.

In a statement released on Monday, February 5, 2024, the High Commission highlighted concerns over potentially inflammatory online comments and veiled threats directed towards Nigerians by certain segments of the South African population.

The advisory urged members of the Nigerian community to exercise caution in their interactions, particularly with regards to their choice of venues for watching the match. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining composure, the High Commission advised against engaging in loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations, especially in public spaces, in the event of a Super Eagles victory.

Furthermore, Nigerians were reminded to uphold their reputation for good conduct and adherence to the law, both before and after the match. The statement stressed the importance of refraining from retaliatory actions in the face of any provocations, and instead encouraged individuals to report incidents to the appropriate authorities.

The issuance of these security advisories underscores the Nigerian High Commission's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens amidst heightened tensions surrounding the AFCON semi-final clash
