During the Senate's screening and confirmation of the newly appointed EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, and the Commission's Secretary, Muhammad Hammajoda, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, raised concerns over the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) unprofessionalism. Akpabio accused the anti-graft agency of focusing more on sensationalizing issues than conducting thorough investigations. He recounted a personal experience in which a letter he sent to the EFCC, explaining his inability to appear in response to a frivolous petition, was released to the press by the office of the EFCC chairman, in an attempt to embarrass him ahead of the 2023 elections.

Akpabio emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the EFCC, questioning whether the agency's founding Act allows for its proper functioning, considering the significant discretion exercised by its operatives. He also cited a high-profile incident involving the arrest of former Governor Rochas Okorocha, where EFCC agents entered his residence through the roof and broke the ceiling, an action he deemed inappropriate for an investigative agency.

The Senate President urged Olukoyede to lead the EFCC in a more professional and evidence-based manner. Olukoyede and Hammajoda, nominated by President Bola Tinubu as Chairman and Secretary of the EFCC, were subsequently confirmed by the Senate after the screening process
