In a surprising turn of events, Senate President Godswill Akpabio reportedly faced a health scare on Thursday, December 14, immediately following his 61st birthday colloquium held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
The incident followed a week of birthday celebrations that commenced on Saturday, December 9, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom, where a massive crowd gathered to mark the occasion.
According to multiple sources, after the conclusion of the birthday colloquium, Akpabio slumped while seated in a chair, prompting concern and immediate medical attention. Witnesses recounted that he appeared fatigued, with one source stating, "The Senate President must have been tired. He was seated after the colloquium and the next thing was that he had slumped. It was when people saw that he had slumped that he was rushed for medical attention."
Another source mentioned that after Akpabio escorted the President and other senators, he returned, sat down, and subsequently slumped. He was reportedly resuscitated on the spot and swiftly transported to a nearby private hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.
However, Jackson Udom, one of the Senate President's media aides, disputed the claims, asserting that no such incident occurred. Udom stated, "The report is not true. The Senate President didn’t collapse neither was he wheeled out. Let the people sharing the story provide a picture of such happenings."
The conflicting accounts have stirred speculation and concern, with citizens and political observers eager for more clarity on the health status of the Senate President. As the story unfolds, questions arise about the potential impact of this incident on Akpabio's political future and the dynamics within the Senate. The Washington Post will continue to monitor the situation closely for further developments and official statements.
