The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to resist approving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike's alleged proposal to spend N15 billion on a 'befitting residence' for Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima.
In a letter dated December 2, SERAP implores Akpabio to exert the Senate's constitutional oversight and reject the plan, citing concerns over the massive expense amid pressing economic priorities.
SERAP's deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, emphasized the potential violation of public trust and constitutional obligations if the Senate greenlights the expenditure.
The advocacy group urges the Senate to scrutinize other proposed budget items, emphasizing its duty to address the country's debt crisis and reject unnecessary spending.
SERAP contends that the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, must assert its independence and fulfill its oversight function by curbing extravagant executive spending
