The Lagos State Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has clarified that the individual arrested for injecting the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad, is not a registered nurse. In a press statement, the association expressed its condolences to the family and associates of the late musician while also emphasizing the importance of professionalism in reporting and conducting investigations regarding the circumstances of Mohbad's death.
The statement stressed that in Nigeria, individuals recognized as nurses must complete a rigorous five-year Bachelor of Nursing Science program at a university or undergo training at an accredited School/College of Nursing, followed by registration and licensing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. The term "Auxiliary Nurse" was noted to have no place in Nigeria's healthcare system or laws.
During the ongoing investigation, NANNM called for caution and accuracy in reporting by both investigating authorities and the media, stating that misrepresentation of nurses and the nursing profession would not be tolerated. The association urged media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a nurse to correct their stories promptly.
Mohbad passed away on September 12 under mysterious circumstances, leading to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
