Kano-based TikToker Junaidu Abdullahi, known as Abusalma, was arrested and remanded in prison for calling for protests against economic hardship in Nigeria. Amnesty International and social media users condemned the arrest, highlighting concerns over free speech and the right to peaceful protest.
Kano-based TikToker Junaidu Abdullahi, widely known as Abusalma, was arrested and remanded in prison for posting a viral video calling for protests against economic hardship in Nigeria. The incident occurred on Friday when security agents detained Abusalma, who was later arraigned in court and remanded in Kano prison.
Abusalma's video, which has since been deleted, called for widespread protests against the government's handling of the economy. He also criticized religious leaders who oppose such protests, stating they are not truly suffering like the rest of the population. He emphasized the peaceful nature of the protests and mentioned that any cleric opposing them should be removed from their position.
A relative, Mustapha Hamza, confirmed that Abusalma received an urgent call on Wednesday morning and left home hastily, after which he was reported missing. The family later discovered he was held at Kurmawa prison by court order, with his case adjourned for three weeks.
Amnesty International condemned Abusalma's arrest, calling it a violation of his fundamental rights. The organization demanded his immediate release, highlighting the Nigerian government's pattern of silencing dissenting voices. Amnesty emphasized that the authorities should focus on addressing the severe poverty and hunger affecting millions of Nigerians rather than arresting activists.
The arrest sparked reactions on social media, with many users criticizing the government for suppressing free speech and peaceful protest. Users expressed frustration over the lack of freedom after speech, calling for an end to such oppressive actions. The police had not responded to inquiries about the arrest at the time of reporting.
