Sokoto State Government challenges Sultan's appointment powers, citing constitutional inconsistencies. The Commissioner of Justice argues governor holds sole executive authority for appointments. Move could redefine traditional rulers' roles in modern Nigerian governance, amid tensions between the state and Sultanate.

In Sokoto State, a constitutional debate has ignited over the Sultan's authority to appoint officials. Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Nasiru Binji, declared during a public hearing that the Sultan lacks constitutional backing for such appointments.

Citing the Sokoto Local Government and Chieftaincy Law 2008, which conflicts with the Nigerian Constitution, Binji emphasized that only the Governor holds executive appointment powers.

The proposed extension of local government chairmen's tenure to three years aims to enhance their operational effectiveness.
