The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has provided insight into the recent deactivations of mobile lines, shedding light on discrepancies in the National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM card linkage.
According to NCC spokesperson Reuben Muoka, subscribers whose NINs were not verified or cleared, and those with disparities in information, experienced service disruptions. While some users reported having linked their NINs years ago, Muoka emphasized that the accuracy of information is crucial. He explained that discrepancies between NIN details and SIM card registration data led to the barring of certain lines.
Muoka urged affected subscribers to physically visit service provider outlets for NIN validation, acknowledging the current need for in-person verification but expressing hopes for future virtual solutions.
The NCC had recently directed telecom providers to bar subscribers failing to link NINs by February 28, 2024, as part of efforts to enhance digital identity for security purposes.
The spokesman acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the deadline but emphasized its necessity to achieve a comprehensive digital identity framework.
