The Supreme Court has reversed the contentious decision to sack Caleb Mutfwang, reinstating him as the Governor of Plateau State. The Court of Appeal in Abuja had previously nullified Mutfwang's election, citing violations of court orders during the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) congress.
However, a five-member panel led by Justice Emmanuel Agim at the Supreme Court deemed the appellate court's decision as perverse, asserting that issues surrounding the primary election were beyond its jurisdiction.
The apex court emphasized that the validity of nomination and sponsorship does not warrant the voiding of an election, and petitioners lacking PDP membership have no locus to challenge the party's primary. Justices cautioned against wrongful judgments, highlighting the societal consequences, while affirming the internal nature of political parties' primary matters.
Mutfwang's reinstatement follows a tumultuous legal journey, with the Supreme Court now solidifying his victory in the 18 March governorship poll.
