Abba Kyari, suspended DCP, secures bail from Federal High Court for alleged asset declaration and drug cases. After 27 months in Kuje Correctional Centre, he's released. Bail conditions were met in both cases. Kyari faces legal battles following FBI indictment and NDLEA arrest. Justice granted amid burial rites for his late mother
After spending twenty-seven months in detention, suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari has been released from the Kuje Correctional Centre. Kyari, who faced charges related to alleged asset declaration and illicit drugs, successfully fulfilled the bail conditions set by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Justice James Omotosho initially granted him a N50 million bail in a case involving accusations of failing to declare assets to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), where Kyari and his siblings were arraigned. However, his release was contingent upon developments in a sister case before Justice Emeka Nwite, also of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he faced charges related to dealing in illicit drugs.
On May 22, 2024, Justice Nwite granted Kyari bail to attend his mother's funeral, setting bail at N50 million with a surety, who was to deposit a copy of their call-to-bar certificate to the court.
Additionally, Kyari was required to surrender his travel passport and report to any NDLEA formation nearest to him during the bail period. Kyari's legal troubles began in 2021 when he was implicated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a case involving alleged international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka, Hushpuppi.
Later, in February 2020, Kyari was arrested by the NDLEA for alleged drug-related offenses, leading to his detention at the Kuje prison in Abuja until his recent release.
