Yakubu previously served as chief economic adviser to a former president from 2007 to 2010 and was the managing director and CEO of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2003 to 2007. He also held the position of commissioner of finance, budget, and economic planning in Katsina State from 1999 to 2003. Yakubu's academic credentials include a Master of Business Administration in Finance and a Bachelor of Science in Economics, both from Wagner College in New York.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the outgoing director-general, Akabueze, for his service since his initial appointment in June 2016 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and subsequent reappointment in May 2020.
The president anticipates that Yakubu will enhance the efficiency and quality of budget management, aiming to promote fiscal sustainability, transparency, and accountability in public finance.
