In a recent operation in the Northern Cape province, South African police arrested eight Nigerian nationals allegedly involved in an altercation during a drug raid. According to police reports, the suspects not only resisted arrest but also vandalized vehicles and other property.
During the operation, authorities were investigating one of the Nigerian nationals suspected of drug possession when a confrontation ensued. A group of Nigerians reportedly attacked the police, prompting officers to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Subsequently, one individual was apprehended for drug possession, while three others were arrested for public violence.
However, the situation escalated as the suspects continued their resistance, resulting in additional charges of malicious property damage. Despite warnings from the Operational Commander, the group persisted and caused further damage to police vehicles. Consequently, four more individuals were arrested for their involvement in the property damage.
Koliswa Otola, the police commissioner for the province, commended the officers for their swift action and condemned acts of violence against law enforcement. Otola emphasized that those impeding police duties would face severe consequences, asserting the state's authority in the Northern Cape Province.
The arrested individuals are currently undergoing processing, with collaboration from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain their legal status in the country. Authorities reiterate their commitment to maintaining order and ensuring the safety of communities in the region
