Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, has allocated N4 billion for the renovation of his official residence at Dodan Barrack in Lagos and an additional N3 billion for the renovation of the Vice President's official quarters in the state. This budget was approved by the Federal Executive Council and is part of a supplementary budget sent to the National Assembly for approval. The president also proposed N4 billion for the renovation of presidential quarters, N4 billion for an office complex within the state house, and N2.5 billion for the renovation of the vice president's official residence in the Aso Rock Villa. Additionally, N3 billion is allocated for the acquisition, renovation, and rehabilitation of four EFCC fortified quarters as a state house complex in the federal capital territory.
Critics argue that this spending is non-essential, especially considering the economic hardship and inflation following the removal of petroleum subsidies. The official residences of the President and Vice President in Lagos are rarely used, as demonstrated by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who used his Lagos residence only a few times during his two consecutive terms in office. Furthermore, it remains uncertain whether President Tinubu will use his residence on Bourdillon Street, Ikoyi, during vacations, which is a short drive from his official residence in Dodan Barrack.
