The government has declared this date a public holiday and heightened security measures will be implemented nationwide to ensure a safe celebration for all citizens.

On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, President Bola Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7 AM as part of the commemoration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. This announcement comes from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Citizens can tune in via television and radio, as the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria will provide the live broadcast.

The Federal Government previously declared October 1 a public holiday to mark this significant occasion. Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo extended his congratulations to Nigerians at home and abroad, emphasizing the contributions and sacrifices of hardworking citizens, asserting that their efforts will bear fruit. He called on Nigerians to reflect on the legacy of the nation’s past heroes and to draw inspiration for future endeavors.

In preparation for the celebrations, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has implemented heightened security measures nationwide. His directive aims to ensure a safe environment for citizens during the festivities, with adequate personnel and resources deployed at key event locations and major highways. Egbetokun reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain security and uphold the rule of law, encouraging unity and national pride as the country reflects on its journey toward freedom and self-governance.
