President Bola Tinubu's call for restraint in summoning heads of ministries, departments, and agencies before parliamentary committees has sparked discussions on the balance between oversight and operational efficiency within the Nigerian government.
Speaking during the breaking of the Ramadan fast in Abuja alongside Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and House leadership, Tinubu acknowledged the importance of oversight in ensuring transparency and accountability. However, he cautioned against excessive summoning of officials, which he believes could disrupt operations and impede service delivery to citizens.
"I have been watching various committees summoning ministers and heads of agencies. I have complained to the Speaker to let the poor breathe. Let these people do the job," Tinubu expressed. He emphasized the need for lawmakers to consider the primary duties of each agency and the potential consequences of excessive disruptions to key personnel.
Tinubu's remarks underscored the delicate balance between legislative oversight and executive autonomy. While acknowledging the influential role of lawmakers, Tinubu urged for discretion, suggesting alternative methods such as accepting representatives or documentation in certain instances.
The President's appeal comes amid mounting tensions between the executive and legislative branches, with frequent summons of officials for questioning becoming a norm. Tinubu's plea for understanding and accommodation highlights the necessity for collaboration and mutual respect between the two branches for effective governance.
Furthermore, Tinubu also addressed the tragic loss of 17 military personnel in Delta State, emphasizing the nation's commitment to honoring their sacrifice.
