A yet-to-be-identified woman died after jumping off Lagos' Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon. Marine police recovered her body near the UNILAG waterfront, where medical personnel confirmed her death. Authorities have taken her remains to Yaba Mortuary as investigations continue. The incident raises concerns about mental health and suicide prevention.

A tragic incident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos when an unidentified woman reportedly jumped into the lagoon. The event took place around 3:00 PM on March 13, 2025.

According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, marine police officers stationed at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront responded swiftly to the distress call. The woman’s body was recovered at the shore-slip area of the university and was examined by medical personnel present at the scene. Unfortunately, doctors confirmed that she had already passed away.

Authorities have since transferred the deceased’s remains to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) mortuary in Yaba for preservation. Investigations are ongoing to determine her identity and possible reasons behind the incident.

This tragic occurrence adds to growing concerns over mental health issues and suicide prevention in Nigeria. In 2024, security operatives successfully prevented a suicide attempt involving a U.S. citizen on the same bridge, highlighting the urgent need for increased intervention measures.

Mental health professionals have continued to stress the importance of raising awareness, providing support systems, and implementing crisis intervention programs to prevent similar tragedies. Lagos authorities urge citizens to seek help if struggling with mental health challenges and remind the public that resources are available to those in distress.

As investigations continue, officials are calling on family members or anyone with relevant information to come forward to help identify the deceased and provide further context surrounding the unfortunate event.
