In the ongoing saga between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, a new twist has emerged with the detention of his Aide-de-Camp (ADC) and security detail by the Nigeria Police Force. The female police officer serving as Bello's ADC was arrested alongside other police details attached to him and is currently held at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja.
The detention follows an order issued by the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, directing the immediate withdrawal of Bello's security detail. Anonymous police sources revealed that the officers were arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting Bello's escape from an EFCC arrest.
The EFCC had besieged Bello's Abuja residence in connection with a money laundering case involving ₦80 billion. However, Bello was allegedly whisked away by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, leading to accusations of obstruction of justice against Ododo.
With Bello's escape and subsequent detention of his ADC and security detail, the situation has taken a dramatic turn, raising questions about the extent of political involvement and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating corruption at the highest levels of government.
