Basketmouth criticized Nigerian film producers on Arise, revealing that some use international streaming platform funds, such as from Netflix, for personal luxuries. Instead of dedicating the bulk of the budget to movies, they allocate only 10% to the project and divert the rest to buying houses and cars.

Nigerian comedian and movie producer Basketmouth recently discussed the growing issues within Nigeria’s film industry, following claims by Nigerian producer Kunle Afolayan that Netflix has stopped funding Nigerian original content.

On December 5, 2024, Basketmouth appeared on Arise TV, revealing that some Nigerian producers misuse funding received from international streaming platforms. According to Basketmouth, rather than spending money on the production itself, these producers often allocate the bulk of the funds for personal luxuries, such as purchasing houses and cars, only spending a fraction—around 10%—on the actual movie.

The comments have sparked reactions across social media, with many users criticizing the misuse of funds and its negative impact on the industry. Some argue that such actions have contributed to the decline of Nigeria’s entertainment sector, as the mismanagement of resources undermines the quality of production. Others pointed out that the practice also impacts actors, with many claiming that their pay is often cut as a result.
