Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi has brushed off criticisms surrounding his performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria secured second place after a defeat to hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the final. Iwobi faced cyberbullying following the tournament, prompting him to delete all his Instagram posts amid rumors of contemplating quitting international football.
However, the 27-year-old has expressed indifference to online criticism, stating, “It is what it is, it is not the first time…that is football. I would rather be off social media, I don’t want to see that and I don’t care.” Speaking on his Project 17 podcast, Iwobi highlighted his commitment to fulfilling the role assigned to him by his coach, emphasizing his willingness to follow instructions.
Currently, Iwobi is with Nigeria’s squad in Marrakech, Morocco, preparing for upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali. Despite the scrutiny, Iwobi remains focused on his duties with the national team, demonstrating resilience amidst online backlash.
