Bandits attacked the Federal University of Gusau in Zamfara State on Friday morning, kidnapping an unspecified number of students from their hostels. The assailants ransacked three student hostels before escaping with their victims.
Troops from the Nigerian Army engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, but the bandits managed to flee with the kidnapped students. In a video testimonial, an unidentified student recounted how the bandits gained access to the hostels by breaking through the windows and ceiling.
"They (the bandits) forced their way through the windows. They dragged them out through the window," the student said, indicating the damaged windows and ceiling. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara, a state in the North West region of Nigeria plagued by banditry.
This attack occurred shortly after the kidnapping and subsequent death of Hamisu Danjibga, a reporter for Voice of Nigeria (VON) in Zamfara. Danjibga was abducted from his home in Gusau, the state capital, and his captors demanded a ransom for his release. Tragically, his lifeless body was discovered in a soakaway behind his residence three days later. The security situation in Zamfara remains a pressing concern, as both students and journalists have become targets of criminal activities.
