Lagos State Government has blamed the death of two post-graduate students of University of Lagos, UNILAG on operators of the Elegushi beach where the incident occoured.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, on Wednesday said that the death of the students, Adeshola Ogunefun and Olufunmilayo Odusina, would have been averted if the beach operators adhered to the standard safety practice of the state.
It will be recalled that the students met their sudden deaths when they drowned at Elugushi Beach during the birthday bash of their colleagues.
Akinsanya, therefore, directed operators of beaches and other public spaces, earmarked for leisure, to give priority attention to safety measures that will prevent avoidable mishaps.
He said government has the responsibility of safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and thus was greatly concerned about avoidable and needless deaths. His words:
“There is no doubt that the operators of the beach in question failed to adhere to the standard safety practice. The Lagos State Government, through its safety commission, set safety standards for all sectors involved in socio-economic activities in the state
Akinsanya added: “Henceforth, Lagos State Government shall not hesitate to take appropriate action against operators of beaches and other public places, who fail to comply with the state’s safety regulations.”
