No fewer than 17 people were killed on Monday when a passenger bus fell into a gorge in India's northern mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh, a police report said.
Some 20 other passengers were injured when the bus plunged into a 121-metre gorge in Paonta Sahib, 200km south of state capital Shimla.
District Police Chief, Sumedha Dwivedi, said that all 17 victims died on the scene, and added that the death toll could increase with some of the passengers sustaining serious injuries.
The cause of the accident had not been determined, but survivors said that the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Report says India accounts for 10 per cent of the world's 1.2 million fatal road accidents each year.
According to the report, many accidents are reported from mountainous regions like Himachal Pradesh and are usually caused by reckless driving, bad roads or the poor condition of vehicles.
