No fewer than 30 people were injured in the stampede that stained the grand opening ceremony to commission the newly built ultra-modern Akwa Ibom Stadium Complex in Uyo on Friday.
A stadium that has a sitting capacity of only 30,000, the arena was filled to the brim as huge number of fans turned out en-masse to witness the unveiling of the edifice.
Most fans were turned back, and there are claims that those outside could have even outnumbered the ones in the stadium.
Despite possessing legitimate tickets that would have given them entrance into the stadium, the fans were refused entrance as there was no more space for them.
The eventual chaos resulting from that, led to an altercation as some of the fans tried to force their way into the stadium, but they met a firm rebuttal from the security officials.
It was in the midst of the confusion that the stampede occurred, injuring many fans in the process.
A series of concerts were held before the eventual match to commemorate the commissioning of the stadium, with the homebased Eagles pipping their Ghanaian counterparts 1-0.
