Award-winning Nigerian singer, 2face Idibia, has championed the cause to protest against the Federal Government. Many Nigerians have joined him in the nationwide protest that will hold February 6, 2017 in Lagos and Abuja.
But, since the artiste made the announcement, there have been several efforts by the FG to frustrate the protest in one way or the other. The first was when the Special Assistant on Media to the President, Femi Adeshina said that the protest is as a result of those that are aggrieved they lost the elections to President Buhari in 2015. As if this was not enough, Lauretta Onochie, also an aide on Social Media to the President confronted 2Face to go on live TV to give reasons for his protest and action.
Also, on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said he will not allow the planned protest against the Federal Government slated for February 5 to hold in the state.
Owoseni said: “Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest. And as such, we won’t allow it to hold in Lagos. We know that Tuface do not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand.”
But, really, why is the FG trying to frustrate the protest. Nigerian Bulletin compiles some of the reasons why this is so:
1. FG Believes 2Face Belongs To The Opposition: The Federal Government seem to believe that the artiste pitches tent with the opposition party – especially as it was in the news few days ago that Senator Akpabio, a PDP lawmaker is a sponsored party to the protest. The Senator however denied those claims. Well, this could be one of the fears of the government.
2. To Cover up the rot of the government: The Federal government wants to frustrate the protest as a measure to cover up for their excesses, and since the demonstration is to protest everything that is wrong in the government since inception.
3. This present government seem not convenient with confrontation: Have you not noticed yet? That the APC-led Federal Government seems not convenient with confrontation? Several attempts by labour unions, groups to protest wrong workings of the government have been silenced or quickly settled. Except for social media protest, no demonstration has been against the Buhari-led Federal Government since inception.
4. Activists bigger than 2Face May take up the protest: The federal government is fearful that renowned activists with higher status than 2face may take over the protest and it would be a messy situation for the FG. Already, renowned artistes have declared their support for the 'African Queen' crooner, and also a civic organisation; Enough is Enough Nigeria
5. The greater side of the populace is on 2face' side: Since 2face announced the protest, it has been the trending topic on social media with the hasttag: #iStandWith2Face #iStandWith2Baba #WeWillProtest #iStandWithNigeria. The larger chunk of the populace is on the side of the artiste and the massive movement is what the FG is afraid of.
