Transcribed from Buhari's interview on Al Jazeera:

1. “There is no need for it [election postponement] if the same military cannot secure 14 local governments out of 774 in six years, how can we be sure that they can secure the 14 local governments in six weeks?”

2. “I believe Nigerians are grateful to our neighbors that have eventually agreed to come and salvage our country for us for good neighborliness so that they too are not threatened by the instability from Nigeria, but the bottomline as far as Nigerians are concerned is the massive corruption in government: where is the vote for weapons for the military, for the police? Where is the money going into?”

3. On whether his campaign would be able to stick to the six-week election postponement: “We have to afford it because appropriate constitutional authority was quoted that after 30 days to the election, dates can be adjusted, so that gives it whatever plausible credibility they need[INEC], so we are going to appeal t our supporters to give INEC the chance and reach the maximum allowed by the constitution – that 30 days to the swearing in of the new government, elections must be conducted.”

4. What do you think is the actual reason for the postponement? “Since the constitutional provision is met, we cannot fight with it, but I hope the military and INEC and the ruling party would accept that this is the limit. We do not expect INEC to say they cannot conduct the election after six weeks. They said before that they were ready to conduct the elections, but now if they were forced by the military to postpone by six weeks, as I have explained, they have the constitutional support. We would ask our supporters to remain calm and participate in the election on the 28th of March and 11th of Apri respectively.”

5. Why can’t Nigeria win the war against Boko Haram? “Well the government is not prepared to fight Boko Haram. I made a statement earlier on which some of the Nigerian press published: the troops deployed in Ekiti state (where we believe we were rigged out), if deployed in the north-east, they could at least have rescued our over 220 girls which were removed by the rebels. They know where they are and whether they have the capacity to rescue them or not, they still can’t give a cohesive reason why the Nigerian government was unable to rescue the girls from the insurgents.”

6. Do you suggest that the current insurgency suits the incumbent and that the government is encouraging it? “I have no evidence that the government is encouraging it, but the government has failed to do its principled duty of protecting life and property of all beings inside his territory in Nigeria.”

7. You vowed to make security one of your first priorities, should you come into office. How would you tackle insurgency, should you come into office? “The first thing is to understand why the military – from Bama in 1945, the DRC in 1960, from Liberia to Sierra Leone to Darfur – the Nigerian military earned the respect of the international community, but now they cannot secure 14 LGAs in their own territory.

If we cannot comprehend this slide – when our neighbors who know we can help them are the ones now fighting the insurgency for us – it is embarrassing.”
