OKLAHOMA – A church, in a bid to attract new members, is now giving away free beer during services.

The East Side Church of Tulsa invited the public for beer for the first time last week. A spokesperson told reporters that the service was designed as an outreach event.

“It’s an opportunity to reach a wide demographic of people to ask questions about what is happening in our Christian world, what is happening in our churches and what is happening in our community,” said the spokesperson.

The poster of the church read “everyone is welcome. No questions are prohibited. No holds barred. Just come and respect the opinions of others. Just having a good honest conversation about God, while having a couple of beers.”

In order to prevent underage drinking, IDs were checked and the limit was three beers per person.

@Lequte, it's not for me to say whether drinking beer is a sin or not because people have different reasons for what they do and I'm not God to judge. But when beer becomes a bait to invite people to church, that becomes questionable and I don't think that's something Jesus modeled.
@curator, I'm not a Catholic and I don't know what wine is used for communion.

Well. I wouldn't call the beer a 'bait.'

I think it's more a revamp. The simple question is: 'why do people willingly go to pubs but are reluctant to go to church?' The puritan will quickly say 'because sin is attractive!'

But could it be because of the laidback atmosphere and the good ol' small talk with friends? Basically, the church (this one, at least) thinks its building is a bit too...er...formal and stifling.

So, maybe, they're trying to make the atmosphere warm enough for all and sundry. There wouldn't be brawls or drunken stupors - the beer limit ensures that.

Although, for a lightweight like me, one beer is enough for me to fall asleep on the pulpit.

But you do believe drinking beer in church is not a good thing and a church offering beer to its congregation is an abomination. Right?

@Lequte, truth be told, serving beer in church as an outreach event is totally out of it. That's a gospel of the appetite. No where in the bible did Jesus used pleasure to entice people. The other day He turned water to wine, it was never to win a soul. The day He fed some with miraculous bread, he never announced bread as an incentive to attending His service. If serving beer would make some people come to church, the best such people can be is church members and not kingdom members. The church will also have to keep giving them a regular dose of beer to keep them coming every Sunday.

Nicely spoken @Temitope , but the truth is that church attendance in the states has dropped to a great extent, pastors have to woo members to come to church and keep coming. Serving beer in church is really out of it, I agree, but drastic times call for drastic measures. The church is trying to do the right thing, butin the wrong way.

Nigeria is also heading in that direction...once standard of living improves and power supply becomes constant, church attendance will fall.
