A Friendswood ISD elementary teacher will stay at home for three weeks after she returns from a
"safari-type trip" to Tanzania, more than 3,000 miles away from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, KHOU.com reports.
The district consulted with an epidemiologist with the Galveston County Health Department, who stated the teacher was not at risk in Tanzania.
The school district said it was acting out of an "abundance of caution."
In a letter released to parents, the school stated:
With the heightened awareness of the spread of infectious illnesses, like the enterovirus and Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa, and including flu season here, Cline Elementary is taking this opportunity to tell parents about the campus' efforts to maintain a safe, healthy environment for our students, employees and community members.
Through an abundance of caution, Cline Elementary is taking these measures in order to keep our students and teachers free of worrying about infectious diseases being brought to our campus.
Removing any concerns and worries about exposure from an African trip will help us maintain a safe, healthy environment for our students.
We appreciate you and thank you for your efforts at home in keeping your children healthy so they can attend school.
