The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, believes that the Muhammadu Buhari administration can get rid of corruption in Nigeria in six months if there are appropriate sanctions for offenders and if the media monitors corruption cases aptly.

According to him, four major factors aid high-level corruption in Nigeria and other developing countries:

  • lack of discipline
  • lack of sanctions
  • lack of monitoring
  • improper evaluation of corrupt cases

He said this at the “International Conference on Tax Havens and the Developing World: The Global Dimension”, organised by the Centre for General Studies in collaboration with office of International Programmes, University of Ibadan (UI).

He was represented by the Sarkin Shanun Kano, Alhaji Shehu Mohammed.

To me we have been fighting corruption from the leaves, stems and branches while the root continues to go down deep. From value orientation from homes-parents teachers to pass pupils and students, to teachers themselves giving answers at exams. Those so called little things, little compromises here and there ultimately led to the albatross we have today- a multi faceted octopus, as you cut the tentacles more tentacles develop. What I have said is in addition to what the Emir said as well as the fifth one added by Curator.
