ETISALAT has launched a special data package for Nigerians who intend to use American video-on-demand platform, Netflix.

See poster announcing data package:

This is an old plan. I was expecting something else. Etisalat can do better.

Don't feel sorry for Netflix. Let us not overstate our importance to their business yet. The company is probably worth more than some of our telcos

That's not what I meant. I know they're big and are raking in profit by the bucketload. I simply don't see their introduction into Africa as a good thing for them. To me it's a waste of time and here's why:

Netflix is only enjoyable if there is data to stream content- and more so if the data comes affordable to users. Data, to the average Nigerian and Africa is expensive. I don't see why most sensible people, would want to shell 7-$8 for a Netflix monthly subscription, seeing it'll cost around $100 data subscription to watch what's bought. What's the point?

Unless there's an agreement with telecoms companies to subsidize data or a plan that'll cushion data charges people won't subscribe, unless one wants to form "I better pass my neighbor".

Moreover, how many Nigerians and Africans have subscribed to music streaming services like Deezer and YouTube Red (music+video) ?

Ericsson is planning some VOD service in collaboration with Airtel Africa. I'm hoping this will be favorable for Africans.
