The Federal Government will soon begin the accreditation of borehole drilling companies to eliminate mediocres and fraudsters, Mr James Aper, the General Manager, of the state Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, said in an interview on Tuesday.

“The Federal Government is developing national drinking water standards and also an accreditation of all drilling companies so that we have professionals monitoring the drilling of boreholes.

''One of the requirements for drilling should be that the person benefiting from the borehole should have basic information about the borehole drilled for him.”

''So when you have professionals handling boreholes, you have better water quality, because the driller is vast in the business and knows the level to get that will yield good water for consumption,’’ Aper said.

Commenting on the possibility of the eradication of cholera from the country, Aper said it was possible, if people would imbibe the right hygiene practices.

''So we are working also at the household level to ensure that people imbibe proper personal hygiene and proper water safety methods.'' He said, adding that this would go a long way to complement the efforts of rural water supply and general sanitation to make sure those diseases such as cholera can be stemmed.
