Due to the recent increase in road crashes in different parts of the country resulting from tyre blow out, the Federal Road Safety Commission this week commenced a nationwide monitoring of vehicle tyres. According to the commission, this was to reduce the usage of expired and substandard tyres by motorists.
A communique, signed by the Corps marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi noted the importance of tyres in road transportation particularly as it relates to safety which is paramount to the commission.
Statistics from the FRSC revealed that between February to April 2016, 70 road traffic crashes were recorded, attributable to tyre burst. Also tyre related crashes were responsible for 5288 vehicles involved in road traffic crashes from 2011 to 2015.
The commission lamented the relative ease substandard tyres get into the country without adequate checks, making them readily available and posing grave dangers to Nigerians.
This is why the vehicle tyre monitoring is quite important. All vehicles caught with substandard or expired tyres will be impounded by FRSC officials until the owner gets them replaced with genuine ones. Failure to do so will lead to confiscation.
