Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwean President remains frustrated by the West’s refusal to accept the outcome of the 31 July elections in which he emerged victorious after clinching 61% of the presidential vote.
Zimbabwe has been under Western sanctions for more than a decade. Prior to the July elections, promises were made that the sanctions would be removed on condition the polls were held under a free and fair environment.
The West, however, has chosen to back opposition claims that the election was not credible. This is despite the fact that observers from the African Union and SADC have endorsed the vote.
Newzimbabwe.com on Sunday reported that, Mugabe dismissed critics of his re-election as "unprincipled and dishonest".
Speaking during an army shooting competition in Harare, the veteran leader said it was clear the "imperialists" would never accept the election results, adding that this was an indication they continued to "pursue illegal regime change against our country".
