The House of Representatives on Thursday honoured a US-based Nigerian medical doctor, Prof. Oluyinka Olutoye, for the rare medial feat he recorded recently by operating on a 23 weeks old foetus.
the House passed a resolution to honour Olutoye with members, led by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, standing and clapping for him for about 30 seconds.
The foetus suffered a medical condition known as ‘sacrococcygeal teratoma’, a tumour, which developed while the baby was still in the mother’s womb.
However, Prof. Olutoye and his team successfully removed the foetus from the mother’ s womb, performed a surgery on the baby to remove the tumour and returned her to the womb again.
The baby grew normally till week 36 and was delivered safely.
The medical feat was celebrated in the US and around the world while the Prof. Olutoye won Nigerian Bulletin personality of the week.
