Scientists at Switzerland’s University of Saint Gallen have released a shocking report which shows the full extent of the damage the Nigerian oil industry has done to the region.

Although the report will come as no surprise to those living in the region, it brings to light the human cost on the Niger Delta region for Nigeria's black gold. In addition, the continuous gas flaring in the region is another area of concern.

In summary:

Babies are much more likely to die in their first few weeks of life if their mothers live close to the site of an oil spill, according to new research. Scientists studied data on infant mortality and oil spills in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region – and describe their results as ‘shocking’.
