- Ibrahim Babangida was born on the 17th of August 1941.
- He is from the Gwari ethnic group, Niger State.
- IBB and General Abdulsalami Abubakar were classmates at the Provincial Secondary School, Bida.
- Babangida joined the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962.
- IBB has four children Muhammadu (son), Aminu (son), Aishatu (daughter), Halimatu (daughter).
- Babangida was among the first batch of Nigerian graduates from the NMTC who attended the Indian Military Academy from April to September 1963.
- Babangida was nicknamed ”Maradona” by the Nigerian press after he ”dribbled” Nigerians severally promising to handover to a democratic government.
- He was enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 1962, promoted to Lieutenant in 1963, Captain in 1968 and rose to the rank of Brigadier-General in 1979.
- IBB is the second longest serving military head of state in Nigeria, after Gowon.
- He is the only military head of state to use the title of President.
