According to the Minister of Health, it is possible to check the outbreak of cholera in Nigeria if citizens had access to improved and proper toilet facilities.

Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, the Minister of Health, represented by Mr Sani Bala, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, made the statement. This was done after the statement by UNICEF declaring that the nation lacked the facilities to provide for adequate waste systems to the majority of its citizens.

The statement was made at an event organised to mark the World Toilet Day.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health, the Permanent Secretary said, "This year’s occurrence of cholera epidemics could be stopped if there is a mechanism to stop open defecation which will prevent contamination of water sources and food."
