Nigeria: The Federal Government has been urged to invest more resources in the development of the nation’s information technology infrastructure to meet global trends.

The call was made on Tuesday in Abuja by Alhaji Isa Yusuf, Acting Director of Commercials at the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI), in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Yusuf said investment in the sector was imperative as the sector had helped to reduce the cost of governance in the country.

``We have our limitations in the basic infrastructure; they are still not to an acceptable level, but we are improving and with consistency and perseverance we will get there,” he said.

He said that the Internet had also reduced overhead in governance, and had cut down bureaucratic processes that hindered easy flow of communication especially in government bureaucracy.

``The Internet has really revolutionalised the load of information flow, from top to bottom and vice-versa.

``It has simplified communication between organisations, management, individuals, and members of staff.

``Information technology is a key to successful workings of any organisation, and more so the government; globally, information technology is cross-cutting.

Yusuf said Nigeria still has a long way to go in catching up with global trends, noting that a lot of improvement could be seen in most ministries, departments and agencies.

On the negative application of the Internet, he said efforts were being made to eliminate the wrong use of the facility.

``In fact, now the United States has already dismantled pornographic sites from Internet connectivity so that children exposure to pornography will be reduced.

``So, since pornographic aspect has been removed, I am sure that other social media like Facebook will improve their content.

Yusuf expressed the belief that everything would normalise with time, adding that the Internet would be strengthened for the benefit of humanity.
