The 10 National Independent Power Projects of the Jonathan administration were built outside the country's stipulated regulatory framework, Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Sam Amadi has revealed.
President Muhammadu Buhari had complained that over $20bn had been spent on the sector by past administrations in recent times, without improvement to the country's power supply.
“Some people have the feeling that the NIPPs are too expensive or so much was spent building them. Now, as a regulator, those projects were built outside the regulatory framework," Sam Amadi said on a RayPower program.
“So, there’s no way we can determine whether they were prudent or not. What I am saying is that the $20bn, whether it is commensurate or not, came up over a period of time when NERC was not there.”
He was however optimistic that the country could generate 31,000 MW with the quantum of electricity expected from the NIPPs as well as the power that would be generated from renewable energy sources and coal.
