Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan was kidnapped from the Corinthian Hotel, Tripoli at dawn on Thursday by an armed group and taken to an unknown location.

According to news24, a brief statement released by the Libya government said, The head of the transitional government, Ali Zeidan, was taken to an unknown destination for unknown reasons by a group of men believed to be former rebels".

The abduction comes five days after US commandos seized senior al-Qaeda figure Abu Anas al-Liby - indicted for the twin 1998 bombings of US embassies in east Africa - off the streets of Tripoli and whisked him away to a warship.

CNN also reported that, the U.S. State Department said it is looking into the reports of the kidnapping, and is in close touch with senior U.S. and Libyan officials. The U.S state department has also assured embassy staff of their safety.
