Mauritanian ruling Union for the Republic (UFR) won the majority seats in parliamentary runoff held on Sunday.

This was according to the provisional results released on Monday in Nouakchott by the country's Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

PANA reports that it won 22 new seats in the parliamentary runoff to secure a majority of the seats in the 147-seat assembly.

This was as a result of the 52 seats it won in the first round Nov. 23.

The Islamist party won four new seats for a total of 16 seats, thus becoming the main opposition party in the Parliament, while the El Wiam party won two new seats for a total of nine parliamentarians.

The opposition coalition, which includes 10 parties and a few associations, boycotted the elections
