The National Conference on Thursday adjourned plenary indefinitely to allow the standing committees begin sitting on April 22 after the Easter celebration.

The motion for the adjournment was moved by the former Akwa Ibom State Governor and delegate, Obong Victor Attah and seconded by Mrs Josephine Anenih.

Attah, while moving for adjournment called for proper time management to enable delegates meet up with the three months duration of the conference.

The delegates had earlier deliberated on the committee work plan and made several suggestions to ensure that the committees carried out their assignments effectively. Some issues deliberated upon were the composition of the committees and the need for extension of the two weeks given to the committees for their assignments as contained in the work plan to about three weeks.

The Conference Chairman, retired Justice Idris Kutigi , applauded the suggestions made by delegates, however, said committees would commence deliberations on April 22 with the existing work plan, pending any amendment.

"This work plan has been prepared on the timeframe given to us from March 17 and ending on June 19, we did this one strictly on the three months given to us. If we need excess time and we are given, there is no reason why the committee duration cannot be extended. For now, the work plan is in compliance with the mandate that we will be here for three months.

"There will be adjustment of the work plan, depending on any extension of time, and it will be open to debate, so there is no finality about this work,’’ Kutigi said.

According to him, this is what we shall be using as from Tuesday for the time being.

The motion for adoption of the work plan was adopted by Mr Ignatius Edet, a delegate representing the Association of Former Speakers and seconded by Mr Adamu Aliyu, a delegate representing North East Geo-Political Zone.

There are 20 standing committees, which are expected to resume deliberations on various key national issues. The committees had been divided into two groups, each group, made up of 10 committees will meet at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) and Sheraton Hotel and Towers.
