An attack on a Malian refugee camp by unknown assailants has resulted in the killing of 22 soldiers in the republic of Niger.
“We received information of an attack on the camp in Tessalit. For the moment we are told there are 22 dead, but that is not a total death toll,” Niger Prime Minister Brigi Rafini said in a tv broadcast on Thursday. “The death toll could increase," he added.
He didn't say whether the attackers are known or if any civilians were wounded or killed in the attack.
The camp’s residents are Malians who fled to neighbouring Niger after Islamist militants, some with links to al Qaeda, seized Mali’s desert north in 2012.
