LEADERSHIP has published an article which briefly discusses the 10 men that have served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Resources are apparently scarce as want and lack are seen everywhere, with man having to get by on what is available. Such led to the emergence of an organized banking systems many years ago, with an apex bank as regulator of the sector for economic growth in any nation. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was established in 1958 and since then, a number of men have served as its governor at diffferent times. In this Package, Abah Adah and Paul Chiama present the highlights of their reign as CBN governors.
Roy Pentelow Fenton
Roy P. Fenton, a Briton, was the pioneer governor of the CBN, as the process of granting Nigeria independence by her British colonial masters was still on course at the time. He held the post from 24 July, 1958, after the CBN became established through the promulgation of the ordinance of 1958, and left the office on 22 June, 1967.
Fenton’s tenure was remarkable in the Nigerian Banking history as it marked the end of the unorganised banking system that was the order of the day before then and an organised, controlled, and debt management oriented financial sector. It was at this time that the Treasury Bill Ordinance which led to the issuance of our first Treasury bills in April, 1960, was enacted.
Malam Aliyu Mai Bornu
Perhaps, only few Nigerians can assuredly say who Malam Aliyu Mai Bornu is. He was the Nigerian economist who became the first indigenous governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He succeeded Roy Fenton, a Briton who was the first governor of CBN. Before going to study economics in Bristol University, United Kingdom, Mai Bornu was an English Language teacher, having taught in Yola Middle School from 1942 to 1946; Kaduna College from 1946 to 1954 and as a house tutor at Veterinary School, Vom, Plateau State in 1954.
Back from UK, Mai Bornu was employed as administrative officer in the public service of Northern Nigeria. He later moved to CBN in 1959 where he served as an assistant secretary. He was later appointed CBN deputy governor in 1962.A more challenging task was heaped on his shoulders in 1963 when he was elevated to the position of governor of the apex bank, thus, becoming the first Nigerian to head the bankers’ bank. He served as CBN governor till 1967 after which he became the director and general manager, Nigerian Tobacco Company from 1967 to 1969.
